The government has taken a tough stand on detention of Shah Rukh Khan in US, External Affairs Minister SM Krishna has instructed Ambassador Nirupama Rao to take up the issue of detention of Shah Rukh Khan with the highest authorities in the U.S. He said the habit of detention and apology cannot continue. MoS External Affairs Preneet Kaur has reacted to Shah Rukh Khan’s detention saying merely an apology from the US government is not enough. She has also reiterated that the matter will be taken up at the highest level.

Tsunami alert has been issued in Chennai after an earthquake measuring 8.6 on the Richter scale hit Indonesia a little after 2 pm. In December 2004, killer Tsunami waves devastated several coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and hit Marina Beach, causing heavy casualties.

Kolkata and its neighborhood were rocked by a mild tremor due to a high intensity earthquake off the coast of Sumatra today. Tremors were felt in Chennai, Bangalore, Thiruvananthapuram and several other cities across South India following the 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia. Areas near Marina Beach Road in Chennai have been alerted in the wake of several coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands being put on alert, police said. There were no immediate reports of damage to property or loss of lives.
