Bhopal gas tragedy survivors now threaten to stop trains passing through the city from December 3, the 27th anniversary of the world’s worst industrial disasters. Denied proper compensation, they must now even contend with the tainted Dow Chemical’s retaining sponsorship for London Olympics 2012. In fact on Friday, hundreds of agitated protestors and victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy demonstrated their anger. Activists and victims marched with banners, anti Dow Chemicals tableaus on the streets of Bhopal and shouted slogans.

The Australian prime minister, Julia Gillard, says she favours overturning a ban on sales of uranium to India as a means of strengthening relations with one of the world’s fastest growing economies.

For more than 30 years, Australia has refused to sell uranium to India because India had not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, but Gillard says it is time to change the policy.

Lifting the ban would bring Australia in line with the US, which signed a civilian nuclear deal with India in 2008.
